District Governor Noel Eustace visited the Rotary Club of Sussex this Monday, October 21st to share updates from the District and to encourage the Club!

In his opening remarks, Noel shared some key notable events that occurred throughout history on November 1:

  • November 1, 835 AD, All Saints Day made compulsory by Pope Gregory IV throughout the Frankish Kingdom
  • November 1, 1512, Michelangelo's paintings on the ceiling of Sistine Chapel in the Vatican first exhibited
  • November 1, 1800, John Adams becomes the first US President to live in the White House
  • November 1, 1924, Boston was granted the first non-Canadian NHL franchise, the Boston Bruins
  • November 1, 1946, First Basketball Association of America game; New York Knicks beat Toronto Huskies 68-66 at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto
  • November 1, 1966, the NFL awards a franchise to New Orleans; name "Saints" alludes to November 1, All Saints Day in the Catholic faith
And then, surprisingly:

  • November 1977, the Rotary Club of Sussex charter members convene their first meeting at the Maples Hotel, now the All Seasons Restaurant. Rotary meetings would continue to be held there every Monday - even 42 years later!
Noel shared his appreciation for the club's commitment to both the local and global community and encouraged us in our growth. He welcomed specifically the four most recent Rotary members/attendees and shared the vision that the Rotary has embracing change.

Noel concluded by updating the global efforts for Clean Water and the End Polio Now campaigns and encouraged the Rotary Club of Sussex to keep doing what we're doing!

Special thanks go to Bob Tremblett for the introduction and to Noel for taking the time to join us for lunch!
