Heart and Stroke Mud Run

The guest speaker on March 2nd, 2015 was Terry Wagner, Corporate Relations and New Initiatives with the New Brunswick Heart and Stroke Foundation, who talked on their new fundraising project, the Mud Run to be held at Poley this summer.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the New Brunswick Heart and Stroke Foundation. As one of his functions, the Foundation has tasked Terry with finding new ways of fundraising...

The Foundation is planning a "Mud Run" event this summer at Poley Mountain. Terry showed the Club a short video of an annual event held in the United States called the "Tough Mudder." The event is considered gruelling by the participants and has some problematic, highly sophisticated obstacles as part of their competition.

Similar events in the Atlantic Provinces:

  • "Mud Hero" held annually at Mount Martock outside Halifax. This event had 6,000 participants in year one with over 700 from New Brunswick. Over 8,000 participated last year with over 1,100 registering form New Brunswick alone.
  • "Mud Sweat and Tears," another similar event run / held annually at Rockwood Park in Saint John.
  • "Run or Die," last year's event run / held at Poley Mountain that attracted over 6,000 participants for a 5-kilometre race.

"Mud Run" is planned for Saturday, July 25th, 2015, to be held at Poley Mountain. The Foundation expects some 3,000 participants which will be staggered to avoid congestion. The organizers believe the average age for participants will be approximately 34, and nearly 70% of the participants will be female. Obstacle construction is already in the planning stages for this year's event.

100% of all proceeds raised from this event will stay in New Brunswick. For more information, Terry told us to check out the website at www.MudRunforHeart.com.

Rotarian Shelley Vail thanked Terry for his interesting talk on the fundraising plans of the New Brunswick Heart and Stroke Foundation. She presented him with a token of the Club's appreciation for his talk.
