Kimmirut Hockey Camp Visit

Our guest speaker for Feb. 4, 2019, was Robert Matthews. Robert was born in South Africa and met his future wife there when Julie Cunningham was doing mission work. Robert and Julie moved to Canada in 2012, and when seeking employment Rob was hired as a teacher at Kimmirut on the Baffin Islands. Rob shared stories of his early moments at the Kimmirut school. Seeing a great need, he connected with people in Sussex to start a hockey camp for the youth. The Camp began in 2015 and has been a yearly event expanding to include a Music Camp. Presently Rob Matthews is a Music teacher at Sussex Regional High.

Greg & Jane Keith Involvement with Kimmirut Hockey Camp
Greg and Jane Keith both shared stories of their involvement in the project and shared how listening to Inuit people has re-shaped their thinking about First Nations People.

After the talk and on the recommendation of the Rotary Club of Sussex Board and agreement of the membership, President Lisa Brown presented a $500 cheque to Rob Matthews to assist with the continuation of this camp initiative. Lisa stated that her company would also match that amount.

Rob thanked the Club for their ongoing support and welcomed Rotarians to become a part of the workforce team as well.
